Brasilia

Last updated: 2026

Brasília is Brazil’s futuristic capital, built almost entirely from scratch in the late 1950s according to the visionary urban plan of Lúcio Costa and architecture of Oscar Niemeyer. Its monumental axis, striking modernist buildings and distinctive airplane-shaped layout make the city unlike almost anywhere else in Brazil, and its entire central area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For tourists, Brasília is less about traditional Brazilian street life and more about architecture, urban planning and experiencing one of the most ambitious city-building projects of the 20th century.
